I never expected I would start running, let alone enjoy it.
My last experience with running was about 10 years ago, when I ran the 20km of Paris (the equivalent of a half marathon). I hadn’t run for 10 years (since high school essentially), and did it with absolutely zero training. I bought my shoes literally the day before the race. It was hard, and I couldn’t walk for a few days after that, but I was glad I did it. I had a great sense of community and citizenship, and felt it was a nice accomplishment.
Then last year I read “Shoe Dog”, the story of Nike told by it’s founder Phil Knight, and got to discover the culture around running, and the spirit that goes with it.
A few months later, I saw the New York marathon passing by my windows for the 6th time, with a number of friends running it, and for the 6th time I regretted not running it.
During the Christmas break, I realized I really wanted and needed to find a sport to practice on a regular basis, to free my mind and exercise. My go-to sport so far had been roller-skating, but I wasn’t doing a tone of it. I also broke my foot while skate-boarding 3 years ago.
It just occurred to me that if I wanted to commit to a regular sport, it had to require the most minimal setup. And that running was essentially the only sport requiring no setup at all.
Long story short, I just started running on a weekly basis, and signed up for the NYC marathon! It’s on November 3rd, and I’m running with Team for Kids, a non profit helping bring sports and physical activity to kids in the US.
